Climate change conference

A climate change conference was held at York University called 'Rise to the Moment'. It was organised by Christian Aid, Young Christian Climate Network, York Environment Sustainability Institute and York University to reflect the international conference on climate change taking place in Glasgow in Autumn 2021.

Our Green Leaders sent questions to the conference and are listed below:

- How are you going to encourage sustainable actions in areas of deprivation? Chloe, Green Leader

- How close is York to achieving the targets for the 2030  CO2 levels?  Jess, Green Leader

- How can the electric buses become more cost effective in York to encourage greater use?  I find it very expensive.  Holly, Green Leader

- What are we doing to ensure alternative sources of power are used so that we can guarantee we don't rely on coal powered stations? Emma, Green Leader

- What are you doing in York to reduce the amount of waste we create?  Matty, Green Leader

- How close is York to using hydrogen as a fuel source?  Eleanor, Green Leader

The panel responded to one of our questions: - How are you going to influence more people in York to care about climate change?  Sophie, Green Leader

This was their response:

Awareness programmes
Fundraisers (weekends so anyone can join)
Supporting small scale business
Community clean-up programme led by students or public like litter picks.
Planting trees
Increasing the use of solar panels

Cutting down on unsustainable shopping habits

Lord Mayor's visit

Meeting the Green Leaders

As a result of the questions posed to the conference outlined above, the Lord Mayor arranged a visit to our school to meet the Green Leaders and answer all the questions.    It was a brilliant day where pupils commented on how it gave a greater understanding of the complexities of managing change.   See the link to the York Press article for more details.

AHS en route to COP26

The Allotment and Eco club met with Majimcha and Phoebe from the Young Christian Climate Network, who came after a relay pilgrimage to COP26, stopping at our school to find out more about our environmental action.

Phoebe, (centre, kneeling) was part of a group who relay walked from the G7 summit in Cornwall to COP26 in Glasgow.  The aim was to reinforce the message that climate change brings with it social injustice to many people around the world who are not able to easily afford the costs of dealing with climate change.

Phoebe and Majimcha heard about the school's Eco-Award projects and how the Eco Club were planning on encouraging people to reduce plastic around the school community.  The visitors were impressed with how our young people were aware of key issues and they shared their stories of what COP26 will consider as we all adapt to the effects of climate change
